CAPTAIN MIKE’S DAD COMES TO TOWN - A WHALE OF A TIME!
By Captain Mike
February 11, 2007
Captain Mike had the opportunity to have a few days off and fish with his Dad - they took advantage of some nice
weather to get Dad on some fish. Plan was to get on some Redfish in the Indian River Lagoon and some bottom fish
offshore Port Canaveral.
Weather looked a little iffy so Wednesday 2/7 Captain Mike and Dad hit the 'goon with Captain Mark Wright and managed
couple nice redfish. Captain Mark put the guys on some fish and we spotted some big schools early but then the west
wind kicked in and made stalking the reds more difficult. What a great experience with Capt Mark as Dad and Captain
Mike had a double hook up and boated two nice slot redfish. Mission accomplished - BIG thanks to Capt Mark. Make
sure to check Captain Mark’s schedule if you want to experience Indian River Lagoon fishing with one of the best guides
in the area! Captain Mark Wright

Next drift Tom boats a nice trashcan (red grouper) and as we get him in the boat to get a picture
the crew hears Dad yell " Holy @#!$...arghhh...uumph...."
The fish is fighting like a big sow and low and behold here's what Dad brings to the surface!
A nice 17lb+ ARS!!

Saturday comes and it Is Captain Mike’s last chance to get Dad on the water. Weather and water
temp were looking up for the brownies (Cobia) so a crew was assembled of Captain Mike, his father
and Tom Turner. The crew left PC about 11am and headed to some 70 degree water.
After arriving Captain Mike gets in the tower and puts Dad on the bow.
Orders are issued - get ready for screaming from Captain Mike - and cast where the Captain says!
Within ten minutes the first ray is spotted and TomT hooks up with a nice fish - then pop. Comes
unglued.
The Captain spots another ray with some smaller fish and the crew gets a triple hookup. Dad get
another first - smallest of the three cobia – and a proud son!

For the next two hours the crew spots 25-40 rays with cobes all over - many fish are hooked up only to
lose them to the rays in addition to lots of finicky fish that follow the jigs and squid only to turn away.
What a fast and furious time - at one point the crew had three giant rays all around the boat.
Captain Mike directs Dad to a ray and Dad makes a great cast and gets his first keeper!!
Mission accompished and Dad returns to Ohio with a great bag of fish for the week.
To top it off on the way in we see this....
Too cool - we watched this thing jump around for about thirty minutes - one happy whale and a great way to end the day……..

MAHI-MAHI SURPRISE! By Captain Mike
January 28, 2007
After hearing of the wheelbarrows of Cobia being caught on Friday, and reading in the paper about
40 pounders being caught by the charter fleet, Captain Mike couldn't stand it. The Cocoanut
telegraph started going off just before lunch on Saturday - the Tunarude was leaving at noon, in
search of brown bombers. The crew included Dale Badgett, Jon Turla, Dave Sipus and Captain
Mike.
Well as it turned out it was one of those "you should have bee here yesterday" deals. No cobes to
be found, and radio report confirmed the same, the crew even hit a couple wrecks to jig deep for
them. But....
While moving about Captain Mike spies several birds on the Lowrance Radar – upon further
investigation the birds were working something. The crew finds a couple pieces of bamboo matted
together with sea grass. Underneath is several triple tail and a whole school of 6-8 pound dolphin.
The crew boated 5 dolphin and two trips on light tackle and lost a couple more on even lighter tackle
(4 lb) before they got wise to us. This all happened in 50 feet too! Lots of fun as everyone caught
fish. We started out looking for brown and ended up seeing green... ya just never know. !!

Thursday was looking like the day to be offshore so Captain Mike invited Capt Mark to join Dad,
and along with Tom Turner the TunaRude crew left PC with nice NW breeze. The hope was the
forecast would hold and it would lie down but it didn't. It made for some tough fishing conditions
but the crew did great! Capt Mark boats a nice little Warsaw grouper on the first drift.
WHEN THE COBIA COME TO TOWN it's the most beautiful time of the year !!

The week in review of Cobia fishing on the TunaRude by Captain Mike Cochran
Starting 3/10 the crew of Mike Cochran, Randy Austin, Karl Pappas, and Tom Turner were met with great
conditions early. Big swell, light winds and sunny skies were sure to lead to many fish. Wrong - after spotting
and boating our first fish early - we saw zero the rest of the day.
A late afternoon run with Captain Mark Wilson, Captain Mike Cochran, Tom Turner and Steve Lucas payed off
with the crew spotting 20+ fish but boating only three. Mike caught two a 19lb fish on 10lb spin and a 26lb fish
Great job by Captain Mark putting many fish in front of Captain Mike, Steve, and Tom!!
Sunday 3/18 was sporty to say the least but with sunny skies and some reports that the fish were up, Captain
Mike Cochran and Dale Badgett left PC about 1:30pm - going out in the nasty conditions paid off with a four
fish federal limit in 2 hours. Dale had the big fish of the day at 34lbs on 20lb spin gear with Mike catching a
nice 23lb fish on 10lb spin.

Randy's fish ready for the steel!!
